If you like Wings of Fire…

Tui Sutherland’s plentiful series Wings of Fire (available as prose and graphic novels) has many young fantasy fans. If you love her world of dragons, here are some other dragon-y books you might like!

Dragon Slippers trilogy by Jessica Day George (started 2007)

Creel is sent to be sacrificed by the local dragon but instead makes a friend. She sets down a path that takes her through war and grief, triumph and romance. I loved how this book played with fairy tale and fantasy tropes.

How to Train Your Dragon series by Cressida Cowell (started in 2003)

Have your kids howled over the movie version of this funny book? Did they know there is a 12-book series to dive into? Immerse yourself in the world of Vikings and dragons, with Toothless and all the dragon friends.

Dragons in a Bag series by Zetta Elliot (started in 2018)

Jax’s mother dumps him with a weird old lady, who is a witch and has dragons! Set in Brooklyn, this series is charming, suspenseful, and full of mischievous dragons.

Dragon Keepers series by Kate Klimo (started in 2008)

Jesse and Daisy aren’t sure what to do with the noisy dragon that hatches from a thunder egg. Naturally they do Internet research and learn that they are now Dragon Keepers, charged with raising their dragon and protecting her from Saint George.

Enchanted Forest Chronicles by Patricia C. Wrede (started in 1990)

Princess Cimorene is not on board with her father’s idea of her future, so she sets out on her own path. She seeks out the dragon Kazul and arranges to work for him as his housekeeper. She much prefers the adventure and challenge of life with a dragon. Another great series that turns tropes upside down.

Immortals series by Tamora Pierce (started in 1992)

I’m a big Tamora Pierce fan, and this series that focuses on Daine does not disappoint. Daine has special connections with animals, and even adopts a orphaned dragon as she finds a place for herself in the Tortall universe.
